THE ROOTS

Maryland born and raised. Cal is a ferocious litigator and trusted veteran in the legal arena bringing nearly 20 years of legal experience and a courtroom resume that speaks volumes to his legal prowess. He is well known for his courtroom confidence and is well regarded for aggressively defending and pursuing his clients interests while delivering superior results.

Self-Made, Cal is the Founder and CEO of a well regarded law firm in Maryland. When he’s not in the courtroom obtaining real results for his clients, you can find him at popular sporting venues across the state supporting the Baltimore Orioles and his Alma Mater, The Maryland Terrapins.

An avid reader, Cal regularly quotes Warren Buffett: “Value is what you get, price is what you pay”. One thing that Cal attributes to his law firms success is developing innovative and unique ways to bring more value to his clients inside and outside of the courtroom.

“Spanning over four continents and more than 40 countries, international travel has impacted my life tremendously. Every country is different. The people, the language, the culture…it’s all different. What I have found is that no matter where you are, you can connect with people from different backgrounds if you keep an open mind. And that’s what I think life is about. Connecting. Interacting with other people, sharing stories, sharing wisdom and helping each other.”

Exploring cities and states within the USA has also found its way into his travel adventures. So much so that Cal annually attends an NFL game in a new city every year, taking advantage of all the culture and history each unique city has to offer. Checking Arizona off the list last season, now standing at 29 of 32, its probably safe to say that he fully intends on visiting all franchises to complete the circuit.

Cal highly values family, friendships and community, and above all else prioritizes his job as a father to his sweet 4-year & 11-year old daughters.

CULTIVATING KNOWLEDGE

Cal received his Bachelor in Arts degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, his childhood hometown institution. Immediately thereafter and having set his sights on becoming an attorney he attended the University of Baltimore School of Law. Eternally in search of expanding his educational portfolio, Cal while in law school simultaneously earned his Master in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore Merrick School of Business.

BRANCHES OF THE LEGAL TREE

To better supplement his education and further his practical experience during his time in business and law school, he made it a priority to pursue a diverse set of areas of the law and business with numerous organizations and government entities. His tenure as an intern, law clerk and student attorney include the following:

  • Maryland Office of the Attorney General

  • Maryland Worker’s Compensation Commission

  • Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County

  • Maryland Office of the Public Defender - Rule 16 Student Attorney

  • Montgomery County Public Schools - Teacher

  • O’Malley, Miles, Nylen & Gilmore, P.A., under the direction of The now Honorable John P. McKenna, Jr.-Chief Administrative Judge for Anne Arundel County-currently sitting.

    THE JUDGE’S RIGHT-HAND MAN

Immediately after graduating from law school and passing the Maryland State Bar Exam, Cal embarked upon his young and eager career by securing a highly competitive and prestigious position as an attorney and Judicial Law Clerk in the Seventh Judicial Circuit for Prince George’s County to the Honorable Richard H. Sothoron, Jr.

Equipped with a strong command of the rules of evidence and procedure he was quickly able to establish a principal role in all aspects of complex civil litigation, high-profile criminal cases and administrative regulatory hearings that were before the Court.

Taking full advantage of this opportunity he was able to gain tremendous insight into the inner-workings within the Maryland judicial system.

“My time with the Judge was like having a key to the legal Fort Knox, immediate access to a myriad of legal resources including all of the Judges of the District and Circuit Courts, the defense bar, county and state’s attorney’s, law enforcement and state and federal agencies. All of which laid the groundwork for my approach to solving any legal matter.”

THE PROSECUTOR

Drawing from his passion for the law and armed with a diverse background, Cal commenced his litigation career as a prosecutor, taking with him all of the experience, wisdom and teachings over the years. Cal was appointed as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Maryland for Baltimore County where he prosecuted felony, misdemeanor and juvenile matters within the Baltimore region.

It was at this time he was able to establish a solid reputation as a tactical litigator and an attorney one can trust. During his tenure he was routinely selected to prosecute specially-set and high profile cases. Further, his interactions and experience with various law enforcement agencies included assisting the Maryland State Police and Baltimore County Police Department with trial preparation and testifying techniques.

Surely, his trial and negotiation skills were an asset to the office but developing strong relationships with attorneys and judges on a daily basis is what has proven to be most valuable to his clients.

THE LITIGATION ATTORNEY

It was his drive to challenge the status quo, fight for the underrepresented and seek remedies for those oppressed and injured that guided Cal to his next destination. He transitioned from his government position to founding his own law firm. He founded his firm on three major principles:

  1. Satisfaction through Impactful Results

  2. Aggressive pursuit of client interests

  3. Building long-lasting client relationships

Cal has captured the very essence of these elements by consistently securing successful results for his clients. Cal boasts a stellar record in cases ranging from civil matters to high-profile criminal jury trials; having helped his clients obtain favorable settlements and Not Guilty verdicts.

While initially specializing in criminal defense and focusing a large portion of his practice on personal injury matters, Cal sensing the demand to further meet the needs of a growing client base was able to further expand into other areas of the law.

“People are getting smarter nowadays; they are letting lawyers, instead of their conscience, be their guide.”
